Before you can enjoy your day in Flores, you need to get there. While the island may seem remote, getting to Flores is relatively straightforward from larger Guatemalan cities.
Most travelers opt for flights from Guatemala City to Flores’ Mundo Maya International Airport (FRS), which takes about 1 hour. Regular flights are available, making this the fastest and most convenient option. If you prefer going by road, buses are also available, though the trip stretches to 8-10 hours.
If you're heading to Flores from Antigua, the best option is to catch a shuttle to Guatemala City and fly from there. Alternatively, you can take an overnight bus from Antigua via Guatemala City to Flores. It’s a long trek (about 12-14 hours in total), but it's a cost-effective option for budget-conscious travelers.
We actually arrived in Belize over the land border from Belize into Guatemala. Flores was our first overnight stop in Guatemala and we were so excited to finally be in this much anticipated country. Crossing the land border from Belize wasn't too difficult, but keep in mind that rental cars will not be allowed. The only way to cross the border would be to take a bus or taxi to the border and catch another on the other side. Or, you could do like we did and drive across the border with your own vehicle (this was all a part of our overlanding adventure down the Pan American Highway).
Once you arrive in Flores, you'll find everything within walking distance, as the island is small and easy to explore on foot. Taxis and shuttles are readily available to get you to and from Tikal, too.

Of course, no trip to Flores is complete without visiting the awe-inspiring Tikal ruins. Located just an hour away by car, Tikal is one of the most important archaeological sites from the ancient Mayan civilization. We have to admit, Tikalis one place we didn't get to visit since it doesn't allow dogs on property at all. Since we travel with a dog and couldn't even leave him in our camper, we decided to pass on Tikal We heard later from friends that this was a can't miss place so we're super bummed. Please go for us and report back how it was! We did a good bit of research on Tikal ahead of time and here's what we learned...
While at Tikal, make sure to explore the Gran Plaza, climb Temple IV for incredible jungle views, and soak in the magic of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. To fully enjoy your visit, plan for at least half a day at the park.

Flores is a relatively small town, but with a regular tourism industry, there are plenty of restaurants that serve up all sorts of food. Like with any destination, we'd recommend eating like a local whenever possible. You're likely to have higher quality of food and at more affordable rates when you eat local cuisine vs. international dishes. Bonus in Flores: many restaurants are lakeside and/or have beautiful views!
