This was our personal favorite ruins site to visit in Antigua, Guatemala! Convento la Recoleccion is different from many of the ruins in the city due to the fact that it has been very slightly changed since the earthquake in the 18th centruy. At these ruins we were able to climb all over the ruins and explore to our heart's content. Bonus: these ruins made for really cool photos!

Tanque La Unión is a historic public washing basin that has become a notable landmark in Antigua. Dating back to colonial times, it served as a communal space where residents would gather to wash their clothes while socializing. Today, it stands as a picturesque site, surrounded by beautifully preserved architecture, and is often used as a backdrop for photos and cultural events. When I was at Tanque la Unión I saw a street dog taking a swim in the pool (it was a hot day and he deserved it!). :)

The Pacaya Volcano Hike is a less strenuous yet equally captivating adventure near Antigua. This active volcano offers visitors the chance to walk across lava fields and witness geothermal activity up close. On clear days, the hike provides sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, making it a memorable experience for nature enthusiasts and casual hikers alike. Some guides will bring marshmallows for your to roast over the hot lava rock and another tours cook pizza right in the side of the Pacaya Volcano!

Cerro de la Cruz is a popular viewpoint located just a short hike (or ride) from Antigua’s center. The site features a large stone cross and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city below, with the majestic Agua Volcano towering in the background. It is a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike to relax, take photos, and enjoy the stunning scenery. The hike itself isn't too long but it is up a large hill If you're not feeling up for the climb, you can always take a tuk tuk to the top (but be sure to negotiate the fare before you get into the tuk tuk!).

Hobbitenango is a whimsical eco-park located in the hills outside Antigua, perfect for visitors seeking a unique experience. Inspired by J.R.R. Tolkien’s world, this destination features hobbit-style houses, scenic viewpoints, and fun outdoor activities for all ages. On the weekends Hobbitenango offers an all you can each breakfast or lunch and admission into the theme park comes with the price of your meal ticket. I'll be honest, we opted not to visit Hobbitenango when we were in Guatemala because seeing the "real" Hobbiton in New Zealand is on our wishlist. That being said, this looks really well done and I've heard wonderful things about it!
