Sugarloaf Mountain, one of Brazil's best tourist attractions, is located in Rio de Janeiro and offers some of the most spectacular views of the city. The mountain stands tall at about 1,300 feet and is often referred to as the "Pão de Açúcar" by locals. If you're planning a trip to Brazil soon, Sugarloaf Mountain is a must-see destination. Here's everything you need to know for your visit.
Visiting Sugarloaf Mountain at sunset was one of our absolute favorite things we did in Rio we did during our five weeks in Brazil! We're sharing everything we know with you today so if you're planning a trip to Rio de Janeiro, keep reading....
Sugarloaf Mountain, or "Pão de Açúcar", is nestled in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, which is located on the southeastern coast of Brazil. This famous peak is situated in the Urca neighborhood and can be easily spotted from the city's various vantage points. It's surrounded by the breathtaking Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, which adds to the scenic beauty of this iconic landmark. Whether you're exploring the bustling streets of Rio or lounging on the famous Copacabana beach, Sugarloaf Mountain's distinctive silhouette is truly an unmissable sight.
There are two ways to get to Sugarloaf Mountain. First, you can take a cable car from the base of the mountain to the summit and the second option is to hike up the trail, which isn't particularly strenuous, but will give you an opportunity to see more of the mountain's natural beauty.
The cablecar ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain is an experience of its own. The journey is divided into two stages, each taking about 3 minutes. The first cablecar takes you to Morro da Urca, a smaller peak with amenities, shops, and a restaurant. After exploring Morro da Urca, you'll catch the second cablecar to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain. These cablecars run every 20 minutes from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so you can choose the time that best suits your schedule. We recommend buying tickets in advance to avoid long lines, especially during peak tourist season.
Ticket office hours: 8:00 AM - 7:50 PM
The first cable car of the day: 8:10 AM
Last cable car to depart the bottom: 8:20 PM
Last cable car to depart back to the bottom: 9:00 PM
First off, there are really two trails that people are referring to when they talk about hiking Sugarloaf Mountain. It can be confusing because there are technically two mountains that the cable cars will take you to and the second and largest mountain is Sugarloaf. The shorter and first one you come to is called Morro da Urca.
If you're wanted to save money but still experience some of the beautiful views that the cablecar ride offers, consider hiking to the top of Morro da Urca (the shorter mountain next to Sugarloaf). The trail takes most people around 45 minutes to complete and is largely constructed into rough stairs making it accessible to most beginner hikers. When you get to the top you're rewarded with incredible views of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Christ the Redeemer, and the bay full of boats. You can't beat this view! Grab a seat at the restaurant and sip on a cocktail as you relax and enjoy the views you've just climbed to get.
The trail is not handicap accessible and every hiker should know their physical limitations. Keep in mind that the weather is often very hot and humid in Rio so you'll need to go prepared with water. Also note that the weather can change quickly in Rio so you'll want to bring the appropriate layers just in case the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Hiking to the top of Sugarloaf isn't really a hike, it's more of a climb. Unless you're an experienced climber with climbing gear you should NOT attempt this trail. If you are an experienced climber and you want to climb to the top of Sugarloaf, this article with detailed trail information will be helpful.
The best time to visit Sugarloaf Mountain in Brazil is during the dry season between May and September. During the rainy season in December through April, the chances of bad weather interrupting your panoramic views are much higher. That being said, the warmest months in Rio are December through April since Rio is south of the equator and those months are their summer months.
The crowds are definitely heavier from December-April since most people are visiting Rio for the beaches. You should also note that Carnival takes place every year beginning on the Friday preceding Lent and ending on Ash Wednesday. This is by far the busiest week in Rio all year. Prices are far more expensive then and the crowds are chaotic. Unless you're planning to attend the Carnival festivities, I would avoid this week.

Visiting Sugarloaf Mountain at different times of the day offers unique experiences. Because the cablecars do not begin running until 8:00 AM each day, catching sunrise at the top of the mountain isn't possible. While the views are beautiful from the top all day long, keep in mind that the temperatures during the middle of the day are very hot.
For a more dramatic spectacle, consider visiting at sunset (this is what we recommend!). The changing hues of the sky, combined with the city lights flickering to life, create an unforgettable sight. Remember, the last cable car descends at 9:00 PM, so plan to arrive at the summit a bit earlier to fully enjoy this spectacle. We highly recommend planning your day to arrive at the summit of Sugarloaf at least an hour before sunset to grab a seat at the bar to watch the sunset over Copacabana. This was one of the absolute best experiences we had in Brazil!
If you do decide to visit during sunset and grab a seat at the bar, be sure to order a Caipirinha. It's the signature cocktail of Brazil and it's the perfect drink to sip on a hot evening in Rio.

Visiting Sugarloaf Mountain is entirely an outdoor experience, and the weather can be unpredictable. It's always best to dress in layers so that you can add or deduct clothing as the temperature changes. Wearing comfortable shoes is also recommended, especially if you opt for the hiking trail. Don't forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle for those hot Rio days!
Once you arrive at the top, you'll have a chance to see Rio de Janeiro like never before. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the coast and spot Christ the Redeemer in the distance. There are also a few stunning lookouts around the mountain, with one of the most impressive ones being the Morro da Urca cliff. Lastly, you can grab refreshments or a bite to eat from one of the on-site restaurants.
The crowds can get heavy, but we went at sunset during peak season and we still managed to snag a spot at the bar for sunset. Always give yourself more time than you think you'll need and try to go during the week vs. the weekend if at all possible to avoid the crowds!
Like any tourist hotspot, it's essential to stay safe when visiting Sugarloaf Mountain. Be sure to keep an eye on your belongings and avoid going out too far alone at night. It's also necessary to be cautious while hiking to the summit, especially if the ground is wet.
The neighborhood that catch the cablecar in is a military neighborhood and has a reputation for being very safe. However, tourists spots are always hotspots for petty theft like pickpocketing so keep your valuables close and be aware of your surroundings.
Sugarloaf Mountain is partially handicap accessible. While the hiking trails are not suitable for wheelchairs or individuals with mobility challenges due to its uneven and steep terrain, the cable car system offers a more accessible way to reach the top. Both the ticket booths and the cable cars are wheelchair-friendly, and there is also an elevator at the top station for easy access to the viewing platforms. However, it's worth noting that some areas at the summit might still pose challenges due to uneven surfaces or stairs. Always remember to contact the site's management or your travel agency for more detailed information before planning your visit.
Sugarloaf Mountain is undoubtedly a highlight of any visit to Brazil. It's a stunning natural landmark that offers breathtaking views of the city and is an unforgettable experience that shouldn't be missed. Be sure to prepare appropriately for your visit, and don't forget to enjoy every second of it. Safe travels!
